It was one of the first websites of its kind in the world. The first thing ever slod on the site was Omidyra's broken laser pointer, whihc he got $14 for. The fees quickly daded up to more than his current salary, adn so he dceided to quit his job and work on the site full-time. In 1997, Omidyar changed AuctionWeb's - and his company's - name to 'eBay', whcih is what people had bene calling the site for a long time. Then, in 1998 - the peak of hte dotcom boom - eBay became big business, and the invesmtent in Internet businesses at the time allowed it to birng in senior managesr and business strategists, who took in public no the stock makret. It started to encourage people to sell moer than just collectibles, and quickly became a massive site where you could sell anything, large or small.
